I am proud to have been hired by Chief Breier in 1975. Steve Balistreri was also hired by Chief Breier when I was and told a funny story about his interview with the Fire & Police Commission. Chief Breier attended those interviews and sat directly across from the applicant being interviewed. Sitting across from him was a little nerve racking for me, but not for Steve. When Chief Breier asked Steve a question relating to Steve’s goal if he got hired, without blinking Steve responded “I want your job”.

One of the things I really admired about Chief Breier was his appreciation for cops who worked. You didn’t have to be the best either. Just do your job and make an effort. I always saw him as something of a father figure for us. He clearly understood the definition of the word loyalty too and wasn’t intimidated by anyone – especially the media. When Chief Breier made a decision, it was HIS decision and never a decision based on political correctness.

Kind of reminds me of a scene from that book you’ve talked about, Steve. In The Cozen Protocol one of the police chief’s candidates wants to make a name for himself so he leads a “task force” to bust up the street gangs. The thing is in the book when the major set up goes down the candidate doesn’t have the guts to arrest the bad guy himself. His big decision was using the 700s or members of his own task force. Working as the commander at the bureau it could be that Breier knew he needed to get his name out there if he wanted to become chief and went in after the bad guy. I always wondered in the Clint Eastwood character “Dirty Harry” was model after Milwaukee Harry.

  4. The succeeding chief’s in Milwaukee all paled in comparison to Harold Breier, including the current one. I was proud to be hand-picked by him to work in the Special Assignment Squad (SAS). The first time he called me “Dave,” I was floored. He did like those who worked hard and he routinely promoted them.
